Internet sweepstakes businesses lead to arrests in Burlington

Jokers is one of the locations police are investigating for internet sweepstakes.

The Burlington Police Department this week arrested three people in connection to the operation of illegal internet sweepstakes and fish game businesses.

In 2018, the department conducted an analysis and concluded that these businesses were contributing to an increase in violent crime. The analysis found that violent crimes such as first-degree murder, armed robbery, shootings and other serious assaults occur at locations with internet sweepstakes. Following the analysis, Burlington police closed 30 businesses that were conducting illegal sweepstakes.

Capt. Mark Rascoe with the Burlington Police Department said these businesses are at a high risk of robbery due to the amount of cash they make on a daily basis. In one instance in 2018, a security guard was killed during a robbery at Gone Fishing Sweepstakes.
